masterminds Michael and Peter Spierig direct Ethan Hawke in an ambitious tale of a futuristic Earth populated entirely by vampires, and the efforts made by the creatures to ensure that their food supply doesn't run out as humankind is faced with extinction. The year is 2017, and a vampire plague has turned most of the planet's human population into bloodsucking ghouls. As the population of mortals fast begins to dwindle, a vampiric corporation sets out to capture and farm every remaining human while simultaneously researching a consumable blood substitute, headed by undead hematologist, Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke). His work is interrupted after stumbling onto a pocket of human survivors lead by Elvis (Willem Dafoe), a former vampire, whose past reveals a cure that could reverse the tide and save the human race. With time running out, Dalton's only hope lies in outsmarting the security forces of his boss (Sam Neill), whose goal isn't just to find a substitute, but to repopulate humanity in order to sell its blood to the highest bidder.

Hawke plays Edward Dalton, a hematologist in the year 2019, in which a plague has transformed much of the world's population into vampires.

Edward is employed by Bromley Marks, a pharmaceutical company that is the chief supplier of blood for the American population, which is operated by Charles Bromley (Sam Neill). As the human population nears extinction, vampires must capture and farm every remaining human for their blood, or find a blood substitute before time runs out. When deprived of blood for extended periods of time, vampires lose their human-like characteristics and begin to transform into winged bat-like monsters called "sub-siders," those of which have diminished mental capacity and no ability to speak are driven strictly by their impulse to feed. However, a covert group of humans makes a remarkable discovery, one which has the power to save the human race. After being saved by Edward, Audrey (Claudia Karvan) - the group's leader - brings him in on the secret: there is a cure to vampirisim. One of the group, Elvis (Willem Dafoe), is a human who was cured of being a vampire. Following a car crash in which he was thrown through the windshield in

a river, he was exposed to sunlight by accident for a very short time before hitting the water, thus extinguishing the fire. Upon emerging,

he discovered that he was human again. Edward attempts to replicate this by using a fermentation vat with an added trap door to initiate controlled sunlight exposure, concluding that the blood needs to be exposed to sunlight while in the human body for the treatment to be effective. After several controlled exposures using the vat's air vent to suck out the fire, the experiment is successful and Edward is cured. Meanwhile a convoy of humans were on their way back to the humans' shelter. The convoy included the human daughter of Charles Bromley, Alison (Isabel Lucas), who abandoned her father after he became a vampire. They are ambushed by a troop of vampires and taken to Bromley Marks. Alison then comes face to face with her father, who attempts to convince her that being a vampire is a better life. She then stabs him and tries to run. Frankie (Michael Dorman) comes in and then knocks her out. Bromley then persuades Frankie to turn Alison into a vampire, despite her resistance to become one. Later Bromley goes to see how his daughter is. He then sees that Alison refuses to drink blood and has been feeding on herself, causing her to begin to mutate into a sub-sider. Due to increasing attacks on normal vampires, Bromley then orders troops to capture all sub-siders and to have them terminated.





The troop then chain a bunch together to a Humvee and start dragging them into the sunlight. Frankie watches the sub-siders being dragged out and becomes horrified when he realizes one of them is Alison. She then looks at Frankie as she is being dragged out in the sunlight. She then burns to death before Frankie's eyes, filling him with regret for having turned her against her will.





They go to Edward's friend and colleague Chris for help in spreading the cure, but he betrays them by alerting Bromley. Chris has discovered a blood-substitute and subsequently does not want a cure to become widespread. Vampires then storm Chris' house and a battle ensues in which Elvis and Edward escape, but Audrey is captured and brought to Bromley Marks.



In the search for Edward and Elvis, they are found by Edward's brother Frankie, who is slowly becoming a sub-sider. The latter reveals that he turned Edward into a vampire not because of a selfish desire for blood or for company, but because he didn't want to face Edward's inevitable death (possibly by being captured and farmed for blood). Frankie initially decides to help them, but his desire for blood causes him to feed on Elvis. In doing so, it is realized that feeding on a former vampire is also a cure and Frankie becomes human again. Edward turns himself in to Bromley to save Audrey and tries to trick him by telling Bromley he wishes to return to being a vampire and spread the cure. However Bromley is uninterested in a cure, since Chris has discovered a blood substitute and it was ready for mass production. Edward then enrages Bromley by saying he was a coward for making Frankie turn Alison and that he couldn't do it himself. This tricks the furious Bromley into feeding on him, which cures him. Edward and Audrey then send him downstairs tied to a chair where a massive group of soldiers are waiting; their desire for human blood is too strong so they feed on him and are cured as well. Edward and Audrey escape downstairs but are cornered by more soldiers. Frankie crashes through the glass doors in Elvis' Pontiac Trans-Am and saves them, giving Edward and Audrey time to escape by sacrificing himself to the soldiers, thus spreading the cure as the soldiers who feed on him are subsequently fed off of by other vampire soldiers which causes a mass feeding frenzy.



After the feeding frenzy is over, Frankie is dead and all but six soldiers, who are now human, have been killed. However, the soldiers are killed immediately by Edward's former friend Chris who then turns to kill them to hide any evidence of a cure, only for Elvis to kill him before he can kill Edward and Audrey. Edward, Elvis and Audrey drive away into the sunrise with Edward proclaiming that they now possess a cure and will turn back, into a human, anyone who wants to be.
